Aviation, by far the most carbon intensive transport mode, is currently responsible for an estimated five per cent of global warming, whilst aircraft CO2 alone is projected to quadruple and could potentially account for 22 per cent of all CO2emitted globally in 2050, writes Thelma Etim.

Bill Hemmings, aviation director of sustainability watchdog Transport and Environment (T&E), argues that state governments and airline association IATA have consistently deliberately ignored fuel taxation, which forms the basis of reducing green house emissions in road transport, along with the implementation of vehicle emission minimum standards.
